Finding the Still Point
Rediscovering the wealth within
Where do we go when we sleep?
As the body quietens down and the thinking my mind stills, I often wonder where exactly do ‘I’ go?
Not thinking, not doing, just simply being within a place of stillness.
It’s another of life’s unanswered mysteries.
It was the inspirational Stephanie June Ellis who first introduced me to the concept of the ‘still point’ as a way of describing this inner space. An inner focus to which we can gently move as we become engrossed in our experience.
I had the joy of attending one of Stephanie’s Art of Process workshops just this weekend past. Slowing down to explore the patterns of nature, of sacred geometry, of ancient wonders. Stephanie’s artwork is breathtaking…

I have always loved the art of natural things. The intricate patterns of spiders webs with dew in the morning, the beauty of ice crystals on the windows after a night of extreme cold, the textural pattern of pine cones that fall from the trees. And it was through Stephanie that I came to discover the wonder of the puffer fish, who, using only its fins, works 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, to carve out a nest for his mate. Guided by an innate wisdom, the sand is his drawing board and he works tirelessly to shape the sand in such a way that he creates a still point within the currents of the ocean… a place in which to safely lay the eggs so new life can flourish. The beauty of what he achieves is stunning.
The wonder of it all is that we are nature. Our own sacred geometry within the patterns of our fingerprints, our lungs, our ears, our cells… and there is a still point within us too, if only we can slow our thinking minds enough to discover it.
When we give ourselves permission to slow down, to take time out, we can all drift towards the still point and gain respite from the world outside. A place in which the body and mind slow down and we can effortlessly rest. Whether through art, or meditation or nature or music or prayer or dance, there are many ways.
And while we can discover the still point within ourselves during daily activities, my sense is that sleep offers us this still point for even longer periods of rejuvenation. A place of rest and restoration, where we can heal emotionally and restore ourselves physically.
A place of both rest and movement in perfect balance.
A place where we can lay down our burdens and find our own answers given by a wisdom within.
Psychiatrist Dr Ainslie Meares helped many people rediscover their stillness, describing this wondrous space as the wealth within. Indian psychology honours this space too as primal. In Ayurveda, healing begins from the inside out, as the very essence of our being weaves us back together in the quietness of this space, both physically and emotionally. We just need to honour this part of ourselves and create the opportunity.
When life has not provided this opportunity, and our problems are beyond conscious resolution, an appropriate therapeutic approach can support a person to find their own still point, where with guidance, they can engage their subconscious resources to resolve problems and heal emotionally too.
In my work, it is such a joy to walk with people for a while as they find their still point and rediscover the wealth within…
P.S.H., a therapeutic approach developed and used for over 40 years in Australia, offers a person the opportunity to create an inner focus in a therapeutic space, and with appropriate guidance, use their own natural subconscious abilities to heal emotional memory, as we are perfectly designed to do.
